I made a point of asking what the fees for my annual cleaning / exam would be BEFORE my appointment. I was told $170.00 over the phone. When I sat in the exam chair, the cleaning tech told me that she would be taking X-rays. I asked, "is that necessary and is that included in the $170.00?" She said, "yes"..
When I went to check out, I was presented with a bill for $248.00. I asked "how did we get from the $170.00 I was quoted to $248.00?" I was told "because we dd X-rays". I related my advance conversations on the phone and with the tech and received nothing but an embarassed look in return. No offer to adjust, no apology, just embarassment...
That's a lot of money for $35 minutes in the chair, only 2-3 of which were spent with the dentist—over $400/hour for routine services. I was prepared to pay $170.00, which is already a lot. But $248.00—for a cleaning and brief exam? That was an unwelcome surprise.
I paid the bill as presented and left unsatisfied.
