My 5 year old lab had been limping for a few days so I took her to a vet (not Windmill AH) close to my home to see what was wrong. Through just a physical examination, the vet diagnosed it as an ACL injury, gave her a cortisone shot, pain medication, and sent us on our way. Her limp returned a few weeks later after the shot wore off. I took her back in and this time he performed x-rays. The x-ray revealed that her femur bone was swollen and enlarged. Decisively and without running further tests (blood work, chest x-rays), he informed me it was bone cancer and she would be dead within a month. Everything was very matter-of-fact and he offered no other options besides "making her comfortable."
I was completely devastated to say the least. However, before even leaving the parking lot of that vet, I called Windmill to schedule an appointment for a second opinion. My sister takes her dogs there and has always spoken highly of them. I noticed a huge difference in customer service from the very first phone call. The receptionist was empathetic, kind, and made me an appointment for the very next day with Dr. Price.
It's been a little over a month since our initial appointment. Contrary to what the original vet told me, my dog is still alive and well, besides the limp. We have ran numerous tests and taken a few x-rays to try and determine a prognosis for my dog's leg injury/illness. I cannot put into words how great Dr. Price has been. She has been patient with me and my family from the beginning, explaining to us in detail what the results mean and what our next steps could be. I know she is a busy person but you'd never be able to tell during our appointments. She is as determined to find out what is wrong with my dog as she would be if she were her own. All of the technicians (I think by now I know them all! :D) are attentive, careful, and loving. I'm one of those weird dog moms who treats their dog like their child. As long as I am living here in Abilene, I will never take my dogs to another veterinarian clinic. Dr. Price and her staff are amazing. I wouldn't trust my dog with anyone else!
