General cleaning was fine, but a couple things could be improved:
- I got a hard sell for braces from the hygenist. I know my teeth aren’t perfectly straight, but they’re not so bad that this is a wall issue.
- I got a hard sell for a sequencing test to characterize the bacteria in my mouth.
- Without being consulted, they hygenist applied a topical fluoride varnish. I found out the hard way that my insurance doesn’t cover this because it has no clinical value for adults with healthy teeth. I confirmed this with a little googling, and also learned that this procedure is a common profit center for dentists.
I’ve been to this dentist before and previously had good experiences, and I’m sure they did a fine job, but this time it felt like being at a used car lot. It made me wonder if the hygienists were being laid on commission.
