I did a smog check at Auto & RV Specialists after a referral from AAA.

However, after doing the check, they said that it failed due to a dashboard panel light on.

They charged me $36.74 for this smog check, and then said told me to return later for a diagnosis ($109.50 for the first hour), then repairs as needed (unestimated cost), and then run the monitors for $54.75 or longer, and then do another smog check for $44.99.

Thinking something was odd, I took the car to another AAA-recommended garage. They said Auto & RV should have informed me in advance that with a dashboard light on, I could not pass the smog check under any circumstances. Thus Auto & RV ran the first test knowing I would fail, in order to charge me for two smog checks plus repairs.

This is unethical, and I have let AAA and the BBB know about this. I would advise people to go elsewhere for their smog check if you think there is any chance of failing it on a technicality.

(And even if you can pass, they essentially have no waiting room -- just a chair in the corner. It's not a very comfortable place.)

Auto&RV Specialists replied:

Dear Mr Beamer, As I explained in the letter that you wrote to the BBB that we must report a check engine light as a fail on the smog test as required by law. What the other shop told you is completely wrong. We were told by the BAR that we are required to report this. We are sorry you feel this way.
