I had tires put on my van last fall and requested my brakes looked at because of pulling to the side and a clunking noise. Was told they needed more time when I picked up my van with the new tires so I am assuming they didn't even look at the brakes. I took my van in on Aug 19th for safety and emission inspection. I also had a leak on one of the tires and I requested my brakes looked at again. I told them I had a spongy feel to the brakes and they didn't seem to be working right. When my van was ready it passed inspection and nothing was said about the brakes so I had to ask what they found. I was told the left side was at 2/32 and it was recommended I replace the pads. After getting home I was concerned of the brake condition since I new I had more than 2/32 left on the pads. I removed the front wheel and calipers and found the drivers side inner brake pad disintegrated and coming completely apart. I felt it to be unsafe to return to the shop so I replaced the pads myself. I do not feel as if the shop put enough emphasis on the safety of my vehicle or family.
We hope you know we take safety very seriously. Never would we want to send a vehicle out on the road knowing it was unsafe. As we discussed with Ron, the brakes were inspected and still had more than the required thickness to pass the safety inspection. However when Ron took the caliper off, which is not something that is required for a safety inspection, only a visual inspection is required, we found his vehicle to pass this inspection. Upon taking the brake caliper off the brake pad came apart at that time. Had we know the brake pad would have done that we would have recommended brakes and not let the vehicle leave the shop. As we have explained to our customer we would have never seen this problem unless given authorization to remove the brake calipers to perform a deeper inspection then we would have caught it in the same manner the customer did. We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused our customer I assure it was unintended.
