The dental assistant who treated me caused a bit too much pain by scraping my gums repeatedly. Also, I ended up swallowing bits that were scrapped out of my teeth onto my tongue. The assistant also entered several notes about issues such as gum bleeding but didn't mention any of them to me directly.
We are sorry you had such an uncomfortable experience. Some patients will build up more tartar and stain in between appointments than others. Removing these deposits may require repeated scrapings and your roots may be more sensitive and your gums more tender. For patients who present like this we usually recommend to come more frequently for cleanings so that they will be more comfortable. The hygienist doesn't have the benefit of a chairside assistant who can suction up all debris as it comes loose from the teeth so sometimes by the time the hygienist has the opportunity to rinse your mouth you may have involuntarily swallowed some of this material. None of these loose particles will harm you if swallowed. My hygienists and I always make it a habit of discussing any findings when I come in for the exam so any issues that were discovered during the appointment will be explained to the patient and the proper treatment recommednded. The patient always has the opportunity to ask questions. If any of our patients are unhappy with the experience they had with one of our hygienists and would like a different hygienist we will be happy to honor their request and there will be no hard feelings.
