Previously, we have been very happy with the expertise and service of Mike and Consumers Automotive. However, our recent service request was to check the air conditioner system on our pickup truck. It did not work and had not for some time. Their evaluation was that nothing could be corrected unless a conversion kit (with new fittings for R134A coolant) is purchased for $300. We declined and payed $80 for the 0.8 hour AC system inspection.
A friend looked the AC system and noticed the clutch (on the compressor) did not pull in when the AC was turned on. Further checking revealed that there was a plug disconnected. Reconnecting the plug allowed the clutch and AC system to work and provide cool air. After installing new fittings ($12), gages showed that no coolant was required.
We would not recommend Consumer Automotive for AC work.

I'm sorry you feel like you were not treated fairly. Maybe we didn't explain ourselves correctly. Upon arrival there was no refrigerant in the system. The truck is a 93 model and had an R12 (old) system. I put some R134 into the system to see if the compressor would run. I saw that it would run so I evacuated the system and vacuumed it and recharged it. The vacuum test revealed that there was a leak somewhere in the system. We charged the system to see if it would cool and it was marginal at best in the heat of the day. That is when we called to see if you wanted to proceed further. Because it didn't cool we would have to minimally replace the orifice tube, accumulator, flush the system, install conversion kit, and recharge. That is what we quoted the $300 for. We advised you that because there was a leak that most likely you are going to be spending even more than that and questioned if it is worth repairing since it was a 25 year old vehicle. I left the R134 in the truck at no charge to you. The pressure switch was inadvertently left off as we had to jump it to get the compressor to run. I'm disappointed that you didn't try to reach out to me if you were dissatisfied with the service you received as I would have maybe explained it a different way so you could have understood. The ac service on the truck was done by me so I know first hand what was done.
