I was not impressed that I was asked to leave the room during my child's evaluation, for which I was paying $600. I also wasn't impressed when the vision therapist used a little manipulation on my child to get my child to be comfortable with me being out of the room.
Having specialized in childrens' vision for over 30 years, Dr. Suters' office policy is to request that parents or guardians be in the examination room at their first visit, when children are being tested with the eye examination portion of the test. This allows Dr. Suter to explain the test results and physical or functional vision problems revealed at that time, as well as recommendations. It is also office policy to do follow up testing for perceptual and cognitive aspects of vision without the parent/guardian in the room, as children frequently try to defer to their parents for answers or are distracted during the testing by having a parent in the room. If parents are uncomfortable with having their children tested without their presence, we allow them into the room, but will ask them to leave if the parent/guardian presence in the room is clearly distracting to the child and affecting our ability to acquire accurate results. Our test administrator for these tests is very experienced in both testing, and building rapport with children; she may have conversations about their pets or their sports in order to make the child comfortable during testing. We have never had a complaint about the way these tests are administered. Most parents are amazed at how comfortable and happy their children are to return for the next hour of testing, as they had fun during the first one.
