They don't go in with a scatter approach and just start hacking at repairs by running up your bill and randomly changing parts.
We love this shop because until they understand EXACTLY what's wrong, they don't give you an estimate.
I recently had a VERY unusual problem with an older vehicle that I absolutely love. I got an estimate from another shop where our frien goes, and they said they would have to do a complete rebuild, it would take two weeks to get all the parts neede.
Then I went to Engine Works, where I should've gone first, They traced the actual problem, took pictures of the issue, explained it to me very simply, and it only took four days - and cost half of what the complete rebuild would've cost.
When I asked whether I should bring it back soon to get the complete rebuild done, they showed me all the good parts that they'd tested, and why a complete rebuild wouldn't have fixed the issue anyway. Engine Works is THE BEST in the Bay Area.
Give them a try and see why they are always busy... Great understanding of technical information, courteous friendly service, and they are honest and give you options that you can understand too.

Engine Works does excellent work; I have been going to them for years and they never let me down. This time they ordered a catalytic converter shield for my vehicle, and then installed it promptly when the part arrived. Everyone is very courteous and helpful. My go-to place!

Always good, thorough coverage here. Brought my (new to me) recently purchased used car which I knew had a lot of deferred maintenance. Engine works helped me choose the most critical items and assessed everything else. We managed to address the issues and prepare the car for another 100K mi. I have brought all my cars here since moving to Alameda in 2011.
