I left Frankfort Animal Hospital frustrated and upset. The staff was kind and friendly enough, but I definitely was taken advantage of. When I called to make an appointment, I told them exactly what I was needing: my puppy needed vaccinations to be able to attend puppy class at Petsmart, which I was told would be taken care of if I brought her in for an exam. I told them the name, age, breed and all information about the puppy. I reiterated this when I arrived. When the vet came in with the nurse, however, I was told that since my puppy was two days shy of being 12 weeks they couldn't actually give her the rabies shot. However, since it was required for her class, I have to wait two days and then go get it - paying $50 to go back - 2 days after I paid to come in and get shots. They should have been honest with me up front and told me to hold off two days and then come for her exam so that everything could be taken care of. Or at least let her come back for just the shot and waive the additional fee. Instead, they set it up so that now I have to pay twice for the shot in a two day time frame. (I even bluntly told the nurse before the appointment that money was a consideration for us)
I apologize for any miscommunication and am truly sorry. We (any veterinarians) can not legally give any pet a rabies vaccine until they are 12 weeks old. This is the law and if a vaccine is given 2 days prior to that date it does not count as being vaccinated. If a puppy comes in for "puppy visit", they are charged for an exam $39 and fecal exam (if needed) $20. Then the puppy is given the distemper vaccine and rabies vaccine for FREE ($50 value). I am not sure what you are referring to in your review that is would cost "$50 to go back". If you want to come in and just get a rabies vaccine the cost is $25. If you come in 3 weeks for your next puppy visit, the rabies and distemper vaccines are FREE.
PLEASE DO NOT TAKE YOUR PUPPY TO A PET STORE, FARM STORE, OR DOG PARK UNTIL IT GETS ANOTHER DISTEMPER VACCINE IN 3 WEEKS. Your puppy is not yet protected against Parvo Virus. This virus causes puppies to vomit and have diarrhea for a week. Treatment is supportive care on IV fluids. Parvo Virus has been very bad the past 18 months with FAH sometimes seeing 3 cases a week over the summer. PLEASE LIMIT YOUR PUPPY'S EXPOSURE TO AREAS THIS VIRUS CAN BE UNTIL AFTER IT HAS PROTECTION AGAINST THIS VIRUS.
If you have any questions about this please give me a call at 765-249-7387.
Thanks,
