Jacobson Veterinary Clinic replied:
We apologize if you found the cost of a dentistry at our office very expensive. I would like to explain what is involved that contributes to the cost. First, a pet must be maintained under general anesthesia and monitored throughout. A thorough dentistry should not be done in less than one hour unless a pet has lost many teeth prior to the procedure. We also take dental X-rays which helps us identify disease below the gum line along with what we see above the gum line. If any extractions are performed, and they can be difficult with some teeth, the gum is sutured with dissolving stitches. Then the teeth are scaled using an ultrasonic scaler and then polished with a high speed polisher. Medicines are sent home in many cases to prevent infection and to relieve pain if necessary. Most pets are over 5 years old and need to be maintained on intravenous fluids which requires placing a catheter into the pets vein.
