I knew I needed a chipped filling repaired. After my cleaning, I was shown close up photographs of the surface staining on my teeth and told that 6 of my teeth had cavities that needed to be filled. Although I was a bit troubled by the diagnosis, I went ahead and scheduled the repairs.
I spoke with my sister who is a dental hygienist and she urged me to go for a second opinion. She has temped in offices that pay staff commission on dental work they talk patients into and she has seen dentist scare customers into getting unnecessary dental work. Instead of getting a second opinion, I scheduled a meeting with Dr. Lanese to discuss the teeth. During that meeting, I asked Dr. Lanese if he was being precautious and filling teeth before a cavity develops or if the teeth had cavities. He looked me in the eyes and said all 6 teeth had cavities down to the second layer of tooth. Because he looked me in the eye, I took his word and planned to follow through with getting the teeth filled.
A friend urged me to get a second opinion and called her dentist to help me get an emergency appointment for a second opinion. I am glad I did get the second opinion because other than the one filling repair, I only had one cavity, NOT six cavities.
I am disgusted by the dishonest conduct of Dr. Lanese. I plan to report him to Delta Dental in hopes they will remove him from their provider network. I hope they conduct a comprehensive review to determine how many unnecessary procedures have been performed by Dr. Lanese.
I have the treatment plan proposed by Dr. Lanese as well as the treatment plan from the second dentist. I will gladly make them available upon request.
