We went to Dr. Heller for a second opinion on a lump found on my dog. My dog was scared and kept pulling to get out the door. Dr. Heller felt it was extremely important to repeatedly tell us how my dog was “too attached” to me and that it was a problem. As for his medical advice, well he was for sure an alarmist and kept telling us that he didn’t like the lump one bit and that he’d take it out immediately, as in the next morning. He then went on to advise that since my dog would be under anesthesia, she should have a small sebaceous cyst removed and another area that felt inflamed explored, in addition to a dental cleaning, a hip X-ray since “all dogs should have that” and a urine sample collected. Mind you, the blood work I already had done on my dog was all normal and the needle aspiration of the lump showed infection, most probably secondary to a vaccine reaction, but I wanted other opinions. All and all, the estimate of the cost of what he was recommending came to $2,245. Dr. Heller just tried to scare us and then attempted to take advantage of a fearful situation by tacking on unnecessary procedures that added to the final cost. It was upsetting and disturbing. Thank God we ended up listening to my first vets opinion which was to give it a little more time to see if the lump goes away and sure enough it has now started to shrink and in the end it looks like my dog won’t even need surgery. Thank God I listened to my gut and did not schedule the surgery with Dr. Heller for the very next morning as he was recommending.
