We do appreciate your business and would like to continue our business relationship. California has a detailed set of smog program laws and regulations that each smog station and technician is required to comply. While we empathize and understand your situation, by California State Law we are required to perform the smog test on the vehicle in the condition that it is received. The store and technician can be fined, and possibly have their smog license revoked, for not testing a vehicle with the check engine light on. We do offer a free re-test if performed within 30 days or if repairs are performed by our shop.
After further investigation from your visit on 10/23/2015, it was communicated that the vehicle intake control valve needed to be replaced. Unfortunately in the last 23 months, labor and parts prices have increased state wide.
I would like to personally apologize if there was any miscommunications between the shop and yourself. When a check engine light is on, it means that there is some sort of problem with the vehicle. While the vehicle can still be operated with a check engine light on, it is not running in normal operating condition. This can affect many systems within the vehicle including gas mileage and smog emissions.
