We have been bringing our pets to this clinic for 27yrs. Prior to yesterday's appointment, we had been very happy with service provided at this clinic. My pet is a 12yr old lab mix. The appt was for a heartworm test and to purchase heartguard preventative RX. Prior to the appt, I requested to skip the annual physical to save the cost, if possible. Maya is a very healthy active senior. At her age, we would decline expensive treatment measures if a terminal illness was discovered. The doctor explained an annual physical, in addition to the heartworm test, was needed before they could prescribe heartguard. I agreed to the physical since that was the only way for me to get the heartguard prescribed. In my opinion, there was nothing done in the physical that would have caused the doctor to decline prescribing the heartguard other than the heartworm test that I'd agreed to from the beginning. Instead, I paid an additional almost $70 for an annual physical that I believe was unnecessary.
Next year, I will likely shop around for a vet who will prescribe heartguard without the annual physical
Hello! You will find that any clinic you go to in the Twin Cities will require and annual physical exam at minimum in order to perform lab or preventative services, no matter the age of the pet. Hypothetically, you can get Heartgard at any point of the year through us as long as the Annual Exam and heartworm test is current for the year. I am sorry you found this unnecessary. However, it is our policy and it is in place to follow state and federal laws regarding prescriptions and Heartgard is a prescription. Please feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns. Thanks!
