I have been lucky to not need any vets services as my horses have been very healthy. I called to get some bute powder. I’m a farrier of 43 years only shoeing my own horses now but I had a horse of mine with an abscess and wanted to put him on bute for a few days to make him more comfortable until abscess was gone. Couldn’t get any from you because my horses hadn’t been seen in over a year. Being a farrier I think I know what an abscess is and not need a vet to tell me what it was. I guess you penalize people for having healthy horses. It’s not like I wanted tranquilizer or hard core drugs. Just wanted some pain killers for an abscess.

Mr. Meyer, In response to your review of not being able to purchase -bute- from us, this is out of our hands. Phenylbutazone is a prescription drug as indicated by the CAUTION STATEMENT on the labeling. The Ohio Board of Pharmacy does not allow us to sell prescription products without a yearly evaluation (6 months for controlled drugs). There are random audits of our records by the Board and our license and fines are possible penalties. It would be much easier for us to distribute NSAIDs for the comfort of the animals the same way we can purchase NSAIDs OTC for human use, but we are bound by The Pharmacy Board not to without following their guidelines, regardless of knowledge or profession.
