This review is not from someone who had just 1 or even 2 bad experiences while Dr. Willden was my dentist...this is speaking to 15 plus appointments over 2 years - all of which were for only 2 teeth! Prior to being Dr. Willdens patient, I had no ongoing issues with my teeth, and needed only had minimal dental work because of good dental genetics and being very meticulous about my oral health routine and regular dental checkups twice a year.
Once I became a patient of Dr. Willdens, he was soon diagnosing me with issue after issue. Although previously that had never happened with any of the dentists I had seen, I trusted Dr. Willden and kept having all of the dental work done that he recommended. When he did each of the procedures, he worked SO FAST that I even joked with him once if he was late for a flight or something. I was a little worried if the rush he always was in might compromise the quality of work that he did, but Dr. Willden is someone who has a rather commanding presence as a very tall and good looking man who was always extremely confident. Needless to say, I felt foolish questioning his competency and just trusted him to help fix my teeth.
Then came the year and a half plus of beyond awful experiences with Dr. Willden messing up the same teeth over and over. He had told me that a crown on one of my molars that was put on after it had had a root canal - all about 8 years prior - needed to be replaced, even though it hadnt ever hurt and it didnt have any structural issues like cracks or holes. He said it was just time to replace the crown before anything happened to it.
I again trusted Dr. Willden, and he ended up redoing the crown on it FOUR SEPARATE TIMES because each time he never did it correctly! Meanwhile during all of his attempts to redo the crown, my gums surrounding that tooth became progressively more and more painful and very swollen and I could fit a piece of floss almost all the way under the tooth because the gums were so infected. During one of his attempts to redo that crown, he filed off the crown and he ended up doing ANOTHER ROOT CANAL on it...without even asking me first!!! He literally just told me about it after they brought me off the nitrous oxide they had had me on for more than an hour and a half. It seemed really odd that he only told me about it after the fact, but I was in a lot of pain didnt question him about it. I didnt know at the time, but apparently not getting patient consent is definitely not legal. That was just another aspect of his dentistry that was really messed up.
What happened next? Well the year plus of ongoing decay under that molar tooth spread to the adjoining tooth, which previously had zero issues in any of the xrays or exams. I then got to pay for a root canal and crown on THAT tooth, most of which was not covered by my insurance because I had maxed it out for the year with all the other dental work. Awesome. Dr. Willden ended up REDOING THAT TOOTH THREE TIMES because it kept falling off or never seating properly; just like what had happened to molar tooth next to it! I finally called it quits at his office finally after both crowns fell off YET AGAIN.
The new dentist that I went to in order to resolve the ongoing issues ended up having to do a bone graft (due to all of the ongoing decay underneath the crown that was never being seated properly), an implant, and a crown for one of the teeth; plus a buildup and new crown on the adjoining tooth. My out of pocket expenses at just the new dentists office were over $7500!!! Add to that all the money I paid Dr. Willden, plus all the time I had to take off work for his many attempts to FIX the issues (which clearly he never did), plus all the time I had to take off work for appointments and the recovery time at the new dentists office. The total cost to me was about $20,000 for what should have been one painless crown replacement of about $400 with my insurance.
My teeth and gums have never been the same since he messed them up so badly, and they likely never will be. All of the extremely painful procedures with Dr. Willden have also caused me have overwhelming anxiety and panic every time I have gone to the dentist since him, which I had never previously experienced in my life. I can not put into words how awful that has been to experience during the 10 plus dental appointments that have been necessary with the new dentist in order to repair all of the damage Dr. Willden did; and unfortunately I dont know how or when I will be able to go to any dentist and not have that awful suffocating anxiety the entire time.
I am only taking the time to write all of this in hopes that this will save somebody else from all the awful experiences that I had while I was Dr. Willdens patient. I never would have guessed how much bad dental work could effect my finances and my life until I experienced it myself, and it has been devestating.
