considering the average dental procedure would be banned as a form of torture if done to a POW under the Geneva Convention, Dr Matt actually manages to make you feel comfortable and relaxed (relatively).

I’ve been going to Shane E. Matt DDS (Authentic Smiles) for the past several years. I went in yesterday for my six month cleaning and once the procedure was done I was to pay upfront for the service (out of pocket) and was told that I would receive a reimbursement check from my insurance. This is the first time I have done this in any medical facility. I am not sure if this is a new method that all dentists will follow, but I must say I am really disappointed. I have always been happy to be a patron of this office, but if I can find a dentist that doesn’t make you pay out of pocket I will likely not return to Shane E. Matt DDS.

It felt insulting that Authentic Smiles rather have me cover the cost of my cleaning instead of waiting for the insurance to pay them.

Hi Dane,

We are sorry that you were not fully satisfied with your last visit.

With the new year, we have made some changes in policy. We are now collecting at the time of service, filing your claim, and insurance sends you a reimbursement check in approximately 10 days. It was not our intention to surprise you with this change. We have made multiple efforts to inform all of our patients. We have sent notices via mail and email with each policy change. We have also included this information on every appointment reminder that our system emails.

Our changes in policy have been backed by good-hearted intentions. We believe that insurance had gotten to the point where their influence over treatment was not in the best interest of our patients. By cutting out the time wasted tussling with insurance, we knew that we would be able to offer dental care of the highest quality, and with the highest quality materials. Insurance companies know that the patient is their "customer" and has the option to move insurance companies. They also know that the provider of services does not have options, and in many cases can essentially be strong-armed.

Before making this change, we spoke with a consultant who informed us that 55% of dentists are collecting at the time of service, and that we would be joining the majority. With that said, you will more than likely be able to find a dentist who does not make you pay out-of-pocket, but we sincerely hope that you don't. We value your patronage and would love the opportunity to continue to offer you exceptional dental care in a unique and relaxed environment.

Shane did a great job on my crown yesterday! Yeah, I'm a BIG chicken in the dentist chair, but everything went fine and now my tooth doesn't hurt any more.

The downtown location is perfect and I appreciate how clean the office is + I Love Beth. She is gentle, and informative.

However paying out of pocket will certainly push me to find a new Dentist that will file with my insurance on the spot. Waiting for check to reimburse me is ridiculous in 2013.

Everyone was very courteous and the checkup was done quickly. The staff helped explain the cleaning process and did not try to sell any additional services. Will definitely continue going here!
