I took my truck to Christian Brothers because my power window wasn't working. I was told it was the motor for the power window in the door, and it would cost $550 to fix / replace. At this price, I decided to try to complete the work myself, which I did. I was charged $40 for a "diagnostic" and labor fee for "taking apart the door" in order to diagnose the problem when I informed them I wasn't going to have them complete the work.
After I took apart the door, it was clear that the door had not in fact been taken apart. The vapor barrier was still in tact and covered with dust and not one finger print. The motor was also not the problem, it was the switch panel which takes about 5 minutes to replace.
After spending hours of my time taking apart the door to replace the motor which I had purchased because this was what was diagnosed as the problem, I realized this was in fact not the problem because the window was still not working. It was the switch panel, which doesn't even entail taking apart the door at all.
Although I was refunded my "diagnostic fee" upon requesting so, I received no apology or offer of compensation for my wasted time. Be careful who you listen to when mechanics "diagnose" issues with your car. We all work hard for our money, especially $550 of it.
