I took a 2002 Chevrolet Tracker with rear end damage to Dane's in June 2011 for repair. I started the conversation off with, "This is vehicle is for my kids". I informed him that the insurance company is paying for this repair. They replaced the entire rear end with a used part without my knowledge of the part is going to be used. That information was not communicated to me, so of course the warranty time was not communicated to me either on used parts. Six months later, January 2012, the rear end axelrod broke. The driver side back tire would not turn. So I had the vehicle towed back to Dane's Auto Repair shop. The results were the rear ends needs to be replaced again. I asked Dane how could this be when I just paid Dane's $1,370.78 for a new rear end. He said well you actually paid $400 for laborand $500 for the part. He continued to say, they actually sent the first rear end back because it was bad. So I asked, "how much is this one gonna cost?" He stated it is probably going to cost about $1000.Dane's only guarentee a 3 months warranty on a used part, which I did not make the decision to purchase. I am completelyunsatisfied and lucky my kids were not on the freeway.
DANE'S AUTO REPAIR replied:
This vehicle was towed to Dane's on 6/14/11 with obvious collision damage and an odometer reading of 198,116.
Upon diagnosing the needs it was determined that the rear-end must be replaced, front brakes repaired, and a heater hose replaced.
Since the manufacturer no longer offers this rear-end it mandated that a salvage rear-end be used. The first salvage rear-end that was delivered was not the proper one for this vehicle. It was exchanged for the proper rear-end which was then installed.
The front brake pads were replaced and the rotors were machined.
A leaking heater hose was also replaced.
The vehicle was functioning properly when picked up on 6/22/11.
This vehicle was towed to Dane's again on 2/14/12 with an odometer reading of 215,398.
The diagnosis at that time was that the left rear bearing had not only failed but had been driven until all of the bearings were gone and the axle had broken loose and was exiting the housing.
The condition of the rear-end, due to neglect of the failing bearing, left no alternative but to replace the rear-end again for the vehicle to be drivable.
The invoice, which was signed by the customer when picking up the vehicle, states at the bottom, just above the signature, the following:
....WARRANTY ON PARTS AND LABOR IS ONE YEAR OR 12,000 MILES WHICHEVER COMES FIRST...
This vehicle had traveled 17,282 miles, exceeding any warranty.
Although there was no obligation to do so, the customer was offered 50% off labor costs to replace the rear-end but the customer would be obligated to pay for another rear-end. The customer declined.
