Had my 6 month check-up/cleaning this past Thursday, Nov. 3rd at 10 a.m. All went great except I was told I needed a panoramic x-ray instead of bite wings. Upon checking out, I was taken by surprise that it cost me a total of $251.00 because those x-rays are just about double what bite wings are. I wasn't informed of this and wasn't expecting to pay $251.00 for a cleaning and x-rays. I do not have dental insurance and will not be getting the panoramic x-ray again as I can barely afford the regular bite wings. Laura White

The short answer is, you are correct. You should have been informed of the difference in the fee for the panorex radiograph. In the past however, the hygienist had performed this service without issue.
The long answer. Once every 3 years we need to examine areas outside the diagnostic ability of regular check-up radiographs; the panoramic film accomplishes this and more. It enables us to diagnose cysts, tumors, infections,bony changes and even artherosclerotic plaques that are normally missed when just looking for "cavities". It is a truly powerful dianostic tool at our disposal to help maintain your health.
In the future we will inform you of the difference in fee for this service.
