It's been over a week and my jaw is locked closed and very painful. Can't ear without squeezing food between my teeth. The last time I had dental work done this happened and I spent another visit back to the dentist, a doctors appointment and 3 massage therapist visits on my locked jaw. that was an excruciating procedure and cost me lots of money$$$ plus almost two months in pain. Dr. Furlong said the next time I was in for dental work she was going to do a different procedure. Would you see if there is any note on my chart to refer to this. I am now going back to my doctor for a referral for physiotherapy,
We were sorry to hear of your jaw spasm and locking after your last visit.
When this had happened previously we had made a note to limit dental work to a single procedure at a time. This would decrease the length of time you would be open. We did do this in scheduling your appointment which was limited to the one filling. As well we offer bite blocks to patients with TMJ problems to help rest the jaw during procedures.
Individual patient physiology and habits influence whether patients will have TMJ issues or muscle spasms after dental treatment. Unfortunately if you do have a spasm of locking, the methods of treatment are massage, physiotherapy, heat, muscle relaxants and Bite Plane wear.
Bite Plane therapy in clencher's and grinders decreases stress on joints and muscles and reduces or prevents the type of discomfort post dental procedure that you experienced.
Should you elect to proceed with Bite Plane treatment, you should find that frequency of exacerbation of jaw issues are decreased in the future.
I hope things come under control for you with the steps you have taken. We would be happy to see you to provide any further TMJ treatment you would need.
