In the world of dental insurance, it can be extremely difficult to get good information from these companies. We work with over 350 insurance plans, all of them completely different. We cannot call and insurance company and ever get exact financial information because they simply won't give it to us. That is why whenever we take a new patient phone call and/or when we initially present treatment to our patients, we make it very clear that we are only giving them an estimate based upon our previous history working with that insurance plan. That is also stated clearly on our treatment plan form. Moreover, we strongly encourage our patients to call their insurance company because they will give you the exact amounts. This is stated on the treatment plan form and told to new patients as well.

The amount changed because between the time you scheduled the appointment and the day you came in, we received payment for another patient with the same insurance plan. Our database adjusted all patient's with the same plan so that their estimates would be more accurate, based on the new payment information we had received.

Regarding the root canal, it was Dr. Whitehead's professional opinion that the treatment should be performed by a specialist. We are in the business of treating patients of course - and we do lots of root canals - but, the patient's welfare ALWAYS comes first at our practice. For a number of reasons, your root canal was not one that should be performed by a general dentist. It was somewhat complicated and therefore required additional skill and equipment. Moreover, there were also health and demographic factors to consider.

Again, we put you first. The endodontic specialty exists for a reason. Endodontists spend up to three years in residency after completing dental school, and all they do is root canals. There are probably some general dentists who would've attempted that root canal. But, that could've led to you experiencing lots of pain, having to have the root canal retreated by a specialist, or having the root canal fail all together which could result in you losing the tooth altogether. Wouldn't you feel more comfortable knowing that you were seeing someone trained specifically to treat more complex cases like yours?

You stated that the specialist is 50% more, however that is simply not true. We charge $884 for a molar root canal. Two of the specialists we know in Lexington charge less than $975. One in Columbia we know charges $1025.
