Very disappointing experience. I was essentially “dismissed” from their practice. After my xrays and exam were done, I was told I needed a “deep cleaning” instead of a “standard cleaning” since 4 of my molars had “deep pockets”. Since the “deep cleaning” was over $600, I told them I couldn’t afford it and asked to get a standard cleaning instead, which was covered under my insurance.
They refused to do a standard cleaning, saying it would be “below their standard of care”. I said, “but wouldn’t a standard cleaning be, at least, somewhat helpful? It certainly couldn’t be harmful”. They said no. So even though my X-rays were normal (except for a small bit of tarter/plaque below the gumline on one tooth) and even though I do NOT have periodontal disease or bleeding gums, I was not allowed a standard cleaning, nor was I given any other alternative.
I made the analogy: if I had knee problems and couldn’t afford a total knee replacement, and the doctor gave me a cortisone shot (that was covered under insurance) that would HELP the patient, wouldn’t it? Maybe it wouldn’t address the entire problem, but it would be a helpful interim solution. My analogy fell on deaf ears.
I’m sorry, but where is the humanity here? What about offering an alternative (less costly) treatment? What about financial assistance or alternatives? What about caring for the PATIENT?
